The Truth About Emanuel Full Movie Review:

More a surreal allegory than a realistic narrative, 'The Truth about Emanuel' portrays how two women struggle to deal with loss. One of them is Emanuel, an abrasive seventeen-year-old whose mother had died at her birth, who starts becoming dangerously alienated and misanthropic after her father's remarriage. The other is Linda, who moves into the next-door house with a new-born infant. On impulse, Emanuel offers babysitting services to the older woman, and soon learns she's more troubled than appearances would indicate. Over time, Emanuel and Linda establish a bond which gives them an opportunity to heal their respective traumas.

Unfortunately, the somewhat surreal nature of the film chokes off any real connection to the characters and their issues. It possesses credible dialog, fine acting and luminous cinematography, but most of the time the story is too slow and stylized. Linda and Emanuel are one-dimensional personalities, and although their core issues are unveiled in a satisfyingly organic process, the final resolution is both glib and implausible. As a consequence, these critical scenes play out without much emotional impact.
