Years before meeting Shrek and Donkey, the adorable but tricky Puss in Boots must clear his name from all charges making him a wanted fugitive. While trying to steal magic beans from the infamous criminals Jack and Jill, the hero crosses paths with his female match, Kitty Softpaws, who leads Puss to his old friend, but now enemy, Humpty Dumpty. Memories of friendship and betrayal enlarges Puss' doubt, but he eventually agrees to help the egg get the magic beans. Together, the three plan to steal the beans, get to the Giant's castle, nab the golden goose, and clear Puss' name.

Puss in Boots received positive reviews from critics. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives Puss in Boots a score of 83% based on reviews from 139, with an average rating of 6.8 out of 10. The website's consensus is, "It isn't deep or groundbreaking, but what it lacks in profundity, Puss in Boots more than makes up for with an abundance of wit, visual sparkle, and effervescent charm." Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, gives Puss in Boots 2011 a score of 65% based on 24 reviews. CinemaScore polls reported that the average grade moviegoers gave Puss in Boots Movie was an "A-" on an A+ to F scale.

Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal gave Puss in Boots a positive review, saying "Puss made his debut in "Shrek 2," then did time in the two decreasingly funny sequels. Now he's got a movie of his own, and not a moment too soon." Lisa Kennedy of The Denver Post gave Puss in Boots three out of four stars, saying "It would overstate matters to say Puss in Boots leaves its cat holding the bag (we had to get that in).
