The film received mixed reviews from critics with praise for its action sequences and the special effects and the performances of the young leads and currently holds a 38% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 104 reviews, with an average score of 5.1/10 and the critical consensus reading "It's pretty and packed with action; unfortunately, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is also waterlogged with characters and plots that can't help but feel derivative." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 based on reviews from critics, the film has a score of 39, based on 33 collected reviews, indicating "generally unfavourable reviews." Movieweb gave the film a positive review praising the acting, plot and special-effects saying "A more toned down sequel, that pays off with being a better movie."

Director Thor Freudenthal said he is proud of his film, saying "This movie and the books toe the line between comedy and dramatic action. And I feel our actors understood that tone and realized it beautifully." Speaking on the future of the films, he said "The next time around I would go with the progressive darkening tone of the books. It’s what the stories demand."
